My sweetie makes excellent vegetarian and occasionally vegan meals and I am fortunate to be an opportunistic omnivore, so life is good and we tend to finish our plates. It happened though, we got into a rut. Suddenly there was a lot of frozen Trader Joe’s meals being heated in the oven and sometimes we even ate standing at the counter.
Then, almost as if having been called forth by uttering:
“Klaatu Barada Mumblemumblemumble.”
My Sister sent us a copy of the Veganomicon as a gift and the clouds parted, the sun came out and there was joy in the kitchen once again.
Authors Isa & Terry of The Post Punk Kitchen have been at it for awhile and it shows. They know the Vegan landscape well and it is varied and delicious. There are many truly inventive recipes that do not venture too far out on a limb, as well as more standard fare all of which is well organized in usable sections that help with orienting and deciding on what to sink your teeth into.
The Post Punk Kitchen has a blog here which hasn’t been updated in a couple of months. However there are some delicious posts with recipes to be read if you dig a little.
Check out this recipe from the Veganomicon for Hot Sauce Glazed Tempeh. I dig the things they do with tempeh, adding whole new levels of taste and texture to the standard hippy ingredient. We just had crusted tempeh tacos last night, and it was so good that I forgot to take a photo for this post …

This cookbook is awesome. MamaHun bases a lot of her recipes on stuff she’s found in Veganomicon.
Funny note: the ad on this page right now is for Bacon Salt.
Yeah, it is a winner. They have the recipe for their Snobby Joes on the Veganomicon page of their website. As an omnivore, I don’t really consider it a meat substitute, but it is a really good alternative to meat.
