Back in 2004, my pal Carissa ran away to China. At the time it seemed like a temporary thing, a flight of English-teaching fancy. But here we are six years later and Carissa (aka GreenLadyC) is singlehandedly greening Beijing.
Okay, not singlehandedly. In fact, Carissa found herself inspired by the contrast of China’s lush countryside and its less-lush cityscape, and gathered a group of artists and environmentalists to address the issue. The result was Greening The Beige, an eco-art collective that works to raise awareness in Beijing and around the world.
I’m a big fan of GreenLadyC and her work. From an expatriate English teacher to a nonprofit program director, she’s plotted her own path and keeps marching resolutely forward. Greening The Beige is still a “labor of love” (aka money pit), but it’s got a bright future ahead of it.
