In a nice change from the usual “bridezilla” story, Julia Davis and Andy McLeod are putting their money where there mouths are, fer real.
They have decided to try to grow all the food and make all the dishes that they will serve for their September 25th wedding in Maine.
We love to eat. We especially love to eat fresh, healthy, whole, real food. Naturally, when we started planning our wedding last fall, we agreed immediately that we wanted to celebrate by sharing a delicious meal of fresh, locally-grown ingredients with our friends and family. The catch is, we don’t have a lot of money and we have other priorities where we want to spend our money (we are currently looking for land to start our own farm). Largely due to farm subsidies to big business for growing large amounts of commodity crops like corn, healthy food is often more expensive than highly processed junk. Trying to pull off a September wedding for 100 guests on under $5,000, we couldn’t afford the kind of caterer we wanted.
Their friends and families will make pies and serve as staff. They will have locally made ice cream.
They are pulling off an entire, full-dinner wedding for 100 people for less than $7000. The budget for the food: $1000-1500.
Would your relationship survive growing a farm for your wedding?

Sweet!
yayyyyyy! I think Craft has a series on DIY weddings… but doubt that includes the food. Well done.
sweet! love and farming always went together
I’ve been planting seeds (pun very much intended) in my boyfriends head over the last couple months about homesteading and getting our own house. I think I may have him hooked when I mentioned it could be a tree house…
Better than pre-marital counseling as a way to find a keeper.
.
The Rom and I did this, or tried to, for our own wedding reception. Us and our big ideas. The vegetarian feast with my own synesthsia-recipe menu got passed over in favor of the deli platter my father-in-law sent out for, god love ‘im. It gave me another reason to keep drinking toasts.
I think this is admirable. Go them.
