It took me a while to get used to cast iron cookware. Worst of all was the bit about not leaving standing water in it. How else am I supposed to soften crusty cooking residue for ease of cleaning? I’m not big on hard scrubbing two, or even three times a day (let alone once).
Eggs are the worst. We makeĀ awesome scrambled eggs in thisĀ pan, but the hard crust residue takes quite the work-out to remove.
And then, a few years ago, someone showed me the key to my Cast Iron Salvation. All you have to do is add about an inch of water to the pan and bring it to a boil. It only takes a few minutes and softens all food residue for extremely fast and easy scrubbing.
I suspect that many of you are already wise to this trick. But the few who may not be, are going to be very stoked indeed to learn it. I know this topic is not hip, slick, and cool, but it sure is helpful.
Do you cook with cast iron? Any cleaning tips?

See now, at first you were like “water” and I was like NOES NOT WATER!! but then I realized that boiling it could really work.
I have no cast iron, but someday I will. Till then, I cook with grease and wash with soap.
I usually pour what’s left in the coffeepot over whatever is stuck to the cast iron skillet because acid kills grease. I never thought of just boiling some water in the pan.
And I’ve been using cast iron for years. Is my face red.
Love the pictures!
LOL R.A. Yo have coffee left over!?!
I suppose the coffee trick is as good as the water trick. Either one beats soapless hard scrubbing while banging up my leased sink …
i know, i’m late to the party, but cast-iron is my favorite cooking utensil, and i never knew about this tip!
after scrubbing with a copper scrubby thingy and water (no soap!), i put the wet pan back on the hot stove to evaporate any left over water in the iron quickly. then i add a tad of olive oil and rub it around the pan with a cloth to keep the pan’s “seasoning” going. or sometimes i use bacon grease.
mmmm, bacon grease!
