Has anyone else noticed that the one un-recyclable part of a soft drink is usually a plastic straw? Coffee shop or MickeyD’s,
Mountain Dew or Pousse-Cafe, even a high-end drink is served with a disposable plastic straw.
Earlier this week, Funksteena reminded us of the retro glory of paper straws .
Yesterday was the hottest day of the summer here so far. I am writing this from my bed where I am recuperating after a bout of dehydration. I am dehydrated because I was biking all over town doing errands and forgot my oh-so-environmentally-friendly nalgeen cup, and was too lazy and embarrassed to create plastic waste by buying bottled water.
Stupid.
There was a kid visibly melting from the heat behind me at Starbuck’s, appealing to the harried barista for sanctuary.
He couldn’t even get a second cup of water from her “We have bottled water you can buy” she scolded him.
It got me thinking. Why try and change the whole culture to switch to bottled water? My own dad lived on nothing but Nescafe and Brew 102 for decades. The thirsty boy behind me admitted that he only drank soda. Even our vehicle cup holders are made to accomodate fast food drinks with verticle straws (lifting a Sigg bottle, however briefly, can block your vision, plus there’s the lid to deal with.)
Here’s a solution, and it’s something I didn’t even know existed until I did a google search for ‘reusable straws’ five minutes ago -
3 Nifty Reusable Straws
“Pick from bamboo, glass or stainless steel to find straws that’ll let you abandon your disposable habit and embrace reusability.”
from Mother Nature Network blog
Why not make reusable stainless steel straws the coke-spoon jewelry of the ‘teens?
It’s a lot more chic than those ugly water-bottle-holsters that never caught on.

Catch that ball and run, baybeee! (and then take a nap.) You are awesome.
I’d love some glass and stainless steel ones. And maybe some bamboo for the tiki party. If I ever had one. Or if I wanted to drink coconut milk straight out the ‘nut.
Glass straws are common in Mexico. The best part is many of them have a pretty glass flower attached to them. My kids each have their favorite one. Cleaning milk out of them is a real pissy muck-muck though.
I bet. But when they’re clean you can see that they’re clean.
