GTB10: Plant Your Seed

I’ve told you before about Greening the Beige and the awesome work they’re doing to bring Beijing’s artistic and environmental communities together. A few weeks ago, GtB kicked off their annual event series, called Plant Your Seed. It all started with a big ol’ party, which they called “For the Love & Trash (Art)“! We’re flattered!

Through this week, GtB is hosting a series of events including parties, performances, and tons of great eco-minded art.

Sean Gallagher

←Photographer Sean Gallagher, whose work on China’s threatened wetlands was funded by the Pulitzer Center of Crisis Reporting, is showing his photographs at Club Yugong Yi Shan. Here in America, we too have some threatened wetlands; Gallagher’s thought-provoking series shows some distinct parallels between China’s shorelines and our own.

Meanwhile, on Yugong Yi Shan’s main floor, there are more pieces of awesome trash art including solar- and kinetic-powered lightboxes, a trash sculpture, and Two Hot Outfits made out of 500 plastic bags.

It’ll all be on display through this Saturday, December 12th. In the days leading up to the exhibit’s close, there are more big events:

December 10Art auction of signed prints by Sean Gallagher, with proceeds to benefit The Mangrove Project (Guangdong Province).

December 11Eco=Chic fashion (trashion!) affair and benefit for the Great Green Initiative. Fashion, DJs, body painting, a clothing swap and a Gorgeous-n-Green contest.

December 12Grand finale! A Burning Man-style party night with live music, performance and the premiere China screening of Burn On The Bayou.

Carissa Welton and her amazing team at GtB continue to throw ever more fabulous events on, as she puts it, “ZERO budget.” It’s an incredible feat, especially for a girl who just moved to China a few years ago. And the group is really making a difference in Beijing’s cultural landscape, raising awareness and making it cool to be green.

If you love what they do, please show your support by donating to the Greening the Beige Kickstarter.

And if you can’t make it to Beijing by this weekend, send this to your friends who can!

ahhhh Ms. HUN THE…..thanks for all the love! and inspiration!

mad love from GTB for LOVE AND TRASH!!! viva la revolution.

and yes, we had you in mind for our grand opening arty party, although it was actually called “FOR THE LOVE OF TRASH (ART)”. China is literally surrounded and beseiged by garbage. Seriously. Just read a report that the country produces 30% of the world’s garbage! Yikes.

And you know some other numbers to match?

China is also undergoing desertification across 30% of its territory…
Over the 50 years (since industrialization), wetlands across China have decreased by 50%…

Coming from a poor country with 1/4 of the world’s population (largely living in poverty and consuming waaaaay less than your average American), GTB could really use your help!

    Thanks for giving props.

    all my green love,
